My retirement from the U.S. Army was effective Dec. 1, 2014, however I began my job search a number of months prior. It was a troublesome and humbling expertise for this “ol’ Sergeant Major,” but after six months or so, I landed the proper role â€" serving to different veterans navigate the job search course of at National Able Network (Able). In the 9 months I have been at Able, I’ve had the pleasure of personally working with more than a hundred veteran job seekers. My staff and I are always thrilled when considered one of our fellow vets lands a job. However, some of their tales stand out above the remaining. I had an opportunity to satisfy Ricardo at an occasion at Malcolm X College. He was extraordinarily energetic and excited about discov ering a position within the intelligence arena (which was his specialty in the navy). The resume he initially gave us needed some work: he used a font so small that I wanted an electron microscope to make out his work experience. Thankfully, Ricardo was very open to recommendation. He listened to our recommendations and labored onerous to improve his resume and his job search skills. As I got to speaking with Ricardo, I came upon that his resume was not his only problem to finding employment. He had fallen on troublesome instances. Ricardo had some family and monetary points and was spending time either living in his automobile or at a neighborhood homeless shelter. But, one would have never guessed that from the constructive perspective he at all times had. Careers within the intelligence world don’t often come throughout our desks. However, as I got to know Ricardo, I realized he was capable of much more. An opportunity came alongside that I thought can be excellent for him. We set him up with an interview and naturally, he nailed it. Ricardo is now coaching to become a veteran recruiter for corporations looking to deliver veteran talent to their work pressure. He understands what it takes to be successful as a job seeker. It’s not just a nice resume but in addition a great angle and plenty of hard work.
