Why Fast-Food Recruitment Sucks

Why Fast-Food Recruitment Sucks Those who know me, know that I embrace modern technology, social media and social communications in marketing, branding and networking my business and profile. I believe it is a massive opportunity for good recruiters to attract great people seamlessly. But the growing desire to make the recruitment process faster and more accessible; which on the face of it SEEMS like a good idea (with mobile technology and push-button calls to action such as Apply With LinkedIn),  actually in my opinion does the contributors to large portions of the  recruitment cycle more harm than good. Why? Well ok, lets look at the positives for push-button options: Easier and faster application process for the candidate. More opportunities for more people to see and apply for our jobs. More applications for our jobs. Greater data collection, more applications allows better tracking options. The creation potentially of a talent pool through minimal administration for the recruiter. So thats all nice. Jobs are more accessible, applications are faster, easier and selecting is more simple. So why am I not comfortable with this? Well actually, I dont actually see that this, in the main, is massively beneficial for the recruiter or the candidates. Heres why for the candidates: The LinkedIn CV is (apart from its wording) pretty standardised, linear and robotic. Not good news for the applicant, who surely should be aiming to present themselves as a stand-out candidates choosing their own layout, font and optimisation and not looking the same as everyone else! The fast-food routes encourage the option to apply without a covering letter again denying them the opportunity to accentuate their key points of suitability to the role. If the process is faster and easier, and significantly more applicants are applying with ease; then it is more difficult for each applicant to stand out in the busier crowd. The greater the amount of easy applications made, the greater the ratio of rejections. Thats just basic maths. This is not encouraging to a job seeker. The greater the amount of easy applications made, the greater likelihood of minimal or no contact from recruiters lessening the candidate experience as a consequence. And for the recruiter: Actually, good recruiters dont want MORE applications, they want the RIGHT applications! The easier it is to apply, means a greater percentage of unsuitable applicants. More applications are more time-consuming, deflecting focus on the right candidates, the important jobs, and increasing time spent on catering for bad applications. The recruiter in most industries wants to differentiate candidates by more than words. They need to see individuality, stand-out features, cultural factors, presentation skills and attention to the job application. This is lessened by the fast-food methods. Actually, I could go on but you get the message: As an agency recruiter, I have a fee to earn and justify. If I go fast-food, I dont justify my service. I dont want to ask jobseekers of all kinds to freely apply, and then ask them to form an orderly queue. I want to identify them as specialist and niche, on mutual ground, discussing mutual matters; be able to be recognise individual talent, be recognised for my work as a specialist, and be approachable as a person or company rather than a click. Short-cuts are not the answer. For recruiters or for applicants. The job application and selection process is a serious business that requires the necessary attention and consideration on both parts. If you have 100 Call Centre or Retail staff to find, or 50 operational IT professionals with simple skill identification and selection processes then sure these tools will help. Faster doesnt always mean better.  Easier  definitely  doesnt mean better. Theres a reason why a gourmet restaurant serves better food than Maccie-Ds!

How To Get Jobs With Resume Parsing

How To Get Jobs With Resume ParsingResume parsing is an essential component of the job application process. The purpose of resume parsing is to assist an employer in getting to the most important parts of a resume, as well as to simplify the analysis process. Most employers are able to read resume manually, but they do not need to deal with the data being used by their algorithm.Jobs come in different forms. The most common is that of a regular sales job. The most common means of job placement is to let people who want to work, find the companies that have available jobs. However, sometimes, the employer is not interested in searching for these candidates personally and, to get access to these employees, he employs a company that does the searching for him.Job placement services provide jobs in various categories and locations. These services are so common that they are already considered common. One of the most popular types of jobs for placement is executive. Executive positions ar e often handled by recruiters. They search for job applicants to match the jobs on their list with them.In general, executive jobs are generally presented to applicants with resumes that contain the basic information on the position. The candidate should know what the job entails and where he can be found when he applies for it. Resumes that contain the information that is pertinent to the job are more likely to get noticed and, consequently, get hired. However, resume parsing is not a topic that is commonly discussed during the recruitment process.A major part of the recruiter's job is to generate enough leads in order to get the executive position at the first attempt. The best way to do this is through resume parsing. This is especially true when the executive position that is being offered is offered through a chain of lead companies. Resume parsing and recruitment is not merely done by the recruiter, but by the lead companies themselves.Lead companies cannot always afford to wo rk with hundreds of other recruiters in order to receive these jobs. The process of doing it manually would require too much time and, in addition, would cost too much money. In addition, there would be instances when some or all of the leads generated by the recruiter could be useless. Therefore, lead companies need a way to make use of the information generated by the recruiter. Resume parsing is a method by which the recruiter can deal with the remaining leads.Normally, lead companies would be happy to pay for resume parsing services. Once an applicant has been passed to the lead company, the lead company sends the information they have generated to the recruiter. The recruiter then parses this information into a format that is easily understood by the algorithm used by the recruiter to screen the applicant.Nowadays, most lead companies have automated software that automatically parses these data. This software also creates an outline of the candidate's life to help the recruiter create a comprehensive resume. The summary is then sent to the applicant and, finally, it is the applicant's job to choose a suitable company.

Watch the 5 best speeches ever from our conferences on happiness at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Watch the 5 best speeches ever from our conferences on happiness at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog For the last 8 years we have arranged an annual conference on happiness at work in Copenhagen. The next one is on May 18+19 2017 and for the first time ever were making the conference international, so the whole event?will be in English. We want to show you?just how energetic, fun and valuable this conference is, so here are?five of our?favorite?speeches from?previous years. David Marquet (2013): Happiness at work on a nuclear submarine When David Marquet took command of the nuclear submarine the USS Santa Fe, he knew he needed to change a lot of things. It was the worst performing submarine, was never ready for its missions on time and was basically the laughing stock of the US navy. David came in with a plan to improve the results on the submarine and thereby make its crew happier. By accident, he found that he had to do it the other way around: Make the submarine a happy workplace and results would follow. The new plan worked, and the USS Santa Fe became the best performing submarine. In this speech from our?2013 conference, David Marquet explains how he did it and how you can create a happier workplace too. Srikumar Rao (2009): The two traps that keep us from being happy One of the highlights of our 2009 conference on happiness at work in Copenhagen was Dr. Srikumar S. Raos wonderfully inspiring and funny presentation. His presentation focused specifically on two traps you must avoid, that keep us from becoming happy. Dr. Rao is the man behind the pioneering course Creativity and Personal Mastery, the only business school course that has its own alumni association and it has been extensively covered in the media including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the London Times, the Independent, Time, the Financial Times, Fortune, the Guardian, Business Week and dozens of other publications. The Free Help Guy (2015): Happiness is helping others. The Free Help Guy has devoted a large part of his life to helping others free and anonymously. He believes in doing what you can for others, that value doesn?t look like coins and notes and that for every problem there is at least one solution. He also believes in anonymity rather than self promotion and in living by your beliefs, which is why you cant see his face in the video. In this inspiring speech, he shares his story. Read more at www.thefreehelpguy.com. ?Steve Shapiro (2011): Personality Poker Does your organization help every single employee know their strong sides AND apply them more at work? Do people know and respect their coworkers personalities and preferences? Do you know what makes your coworkers happy or unhappy at work? Steve Shapiro, the author of 24/7 Innovation and Best Practices Are Stupid takes participants at our 2011 conference through a game of Personality Poker, showing the 4 main personalities at work and what makes each of them happy or unhappy. Henry Stewart (2016): 3 advanced tips for creating a happy workplace Henry Stewart is the founder of Happy, a company in London that does computer and happiness trainings. They are also (naturally) a very happy workplace. In this speech, Henry shares 3 advanced tips for creating a happy workplace: Let employees choose their boss Give pre-approval on big projects Let employees set their own goals Bonus video: The worlds happiest DJ (2015) This isnt a speech as such but it is one of our favorite moments from the conferences. This is a German DJ?who became famous on youtube a few years ago for being incredibly happy while playing. He used that as a springboard to quit the day job that he hated and become a full-time DJ. In this video from our 2015 conference he plays a very short set and then shares his story. Meet a man who had the courage to go his own way and became world famous for being happy at work. Does all of that look interesting? Then join us in Copenhagen on May18+19 for our first ever INTERNATIONAL conference on happiness at work. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. And if you want more great tips and ideas you should check out our newsletter about happiness at work. It's great and it's free :-)Share this:LinkedInFacebookTwitterRedditPinterest Related

The Careers Where You Can Make A Difference In The World

The Careers Where You Can Make A Difference In The World A career is a funny thing. You get up each morning and go to work for someone else, and for what? Usually, the answer is money or power or responsibility. Others do it because they are on autopilot. Not too many people will say that they want to change the world. Helping others is commendable but it involves putting your hopes and dreams to one side and concentrating on strangers. As unappealing as this is in the beginning, the world of work can get you down. When money is just a thing, there needs to be something which excites you and gets you out of bed. Making a difference is a deal breaker, so here are four industries which might be of interest. Healthcare Becoming a nurse or doctor is obvious. The problem is the exclusiveness of the industry. As well as getting accepted into medical school, you have to be the sort of person that can handle seven years of intense studying and no sleep. Therefore, a hospice role can be an excellent alternative. Medical Carts for hospice care mean there are shortcuts which will fill in the gaps. Plus, it’s more about the level of attention. Although they are dying, they deserve to enjoy their last moments and you can give them that pleasure. Police Officer The police have gotten a lot of criticism recently for the way they handled certain incidents. However, it’s worth pointing out that they vow to uphold law and order. As humans, officers will make mistakes and they deserve to deal with the consequences. Still, being a policeman or woman requires intervening in peoples’ lives and making them better. From catching criminals and putting them behind bars to attending domestics, you have the power to make a difference. Not everyone will agree, yet it’s the nature of the job. High-School Teacher Teachers, in general, are molders on young minds. But, the people in positions in high-schools are on the front lines because their students are impressionable. Between the ages of thirteen to eighteen, kids need mentors that will put them on the right track. Yes, it might include shouting and yelling and snitching on them to their parents. Perhaps there will be threats and tears. In the end, a teacher has to help set a young person up for life. Teaching math or science or English and grading homework are essential parts of this process. Show them how to act and they will follow suit. Agricultural Scientists Food is in short supply in certain areas of the world. People in Asia and Africa get it the worst, and families starve as a result. Tech means scientists are on the verge of an epic breakthrough genetically modified crops. Understanding how to cultivate food without the usual resources is a cure for hunger. Millions of people, from men and women to young children will benefit as their life expectancy will increase. There is no better way to make a difference than to give someone the gift of a longer life. Don’t you agree?
